An Invitiation to Join the Voluntary Renewable Energy Coalition

Across the United States, more and more businesses and individuals are choosing renewable energy. And their choices have a big impact.  According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, at the end of 2008 the voluntary market represented over half of total new renewable energy demand in the U.S.1 This market accounted for roughly 24 billion kilowatt-hours—enough electricity to power over two million homes for an entire year.

Voluntary purchases of renewable energy have been a significant driver for the growth of the U.S. renewable energy market. For each of the past six years, the demand in the voluntary market has exceeded demand from compliance-based state Renewable Portfolio Standards.2

Since its inception in 1997, the voluntary market has helped customers reduce their carbon footprint and overall impact on the environment. As policymakers consider greenhouse gas regulations and a federal Renewable Electricity Standard, it is critical that any climate or energy legislation preserves the ability of the voluntary market to help customers achieve their environmental goals.

The Renewable Energy Markets Association (REMA) has been a vocal advocate for this message at both the federal and state levels. And we need your help to make sure policymakers hear from all organizations supportive of the voluntary market.

We've created a coalition of organizations that share a common belief in the importance of the voluntary market. This group, called the Voluntary Renewable Energy Coalition, calls upon policymakers to preserve the voluntary renewable energy market under any climate or energy legislation. Members of the coalition agree to three basic principles (next page). There is no fee to be a part of VREC. The coalition is open to all organizations. As part of VREC, you will receive periodic updates on our efforts and opportunities to take action on behalf of the voluntary market.

Policymakers need to hear from stakeholders in the voluntary renewable energy market. Signing on to the coalition is the easiest way to lend your support. I hope you’ll consider joining us.

Best,

Patrick Serfass
